Abstract
The Act provides for the establishment of a territorial sea of 12 miles (sect. 3) and the exclusive economic zone of 200 nautical miles (sect. 7) of Tanzania. The 20 sections are divided into 5 Parts: Preliminary Provisions (I); Territorial Sea (II); The Exclusive Economic Zone of the United Republic (III); Authorized Officers (IV); Offences and Miscellaneous Provisions (V).
The Schedule contains the Law of the Sea Convention. The breath of the territorial sea (12 nautical miles) shall be measured from the "Coastal low waters line", meaning the baseline. The baseline shall be the low-water line along the coast of the United Republic including the coasts of all islands, as marked on an official large-scale map (sect. 5). No exploitation of resources in the EEZ shall take place without an agreement with the Government of the United Republic. This provision shall, however, not apply to fishing by a citizen of the United Republic in or from a vessel registered in the United Republic (sect. 10). Chapter IV specifies in section 13 p1authorized officers and provides for powers of such officers.
