Animal Breeding Act, 2001.

This Act provides a regulatory framework for animal breeding activities, defines the functions of the Director of Animal Resources, the Commissioner, Animal Production and Marketing, the Commissioner, Livestock, Health and Entomology and the Commissioner, Fisheries Resources in the Ministry responsible for agriculture, animal industry and fisheries, provides rules for trade in, handling and use of animal reproduction materials, and provides with respect to the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank.
The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank shall be a body corporate and shall play a leading role in the gradual commercialisation of animal reproduction services and products. The Centre shall also, among other things serve as a National Animal Genetic Data Bank and as a National Central Livestock Registry. The Act prohibits the sales of substandard genetic material or sale of genetic material under different name.
All new genetic materials shall conform to the national biosafety standards as set by the Uganda National Council of Science and Technology (UNCST) and the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS). The Commissioner, Animal Production and Marketing shall establish a system of record keeping, breed registration, and registration and regulation of breeders and their breeding stock, for effective information dissemination.
