Abstract
This Act provides for the conservation of wild animals and plants and the sustainable management of wildlife in Uganda. The text of the Act consists of 94 sections which are divided into 15 Parts: Preliminary (I); Institutional Arrangements (II); General Management Measures (III); Wildlife Conservation Areas (IV); Protected Species (V); Wildlife Use Rights (VI); Professional Hunters and Trappers (VII); Methods of Hunting and Taking, and Responsibilities of Hunters (VIII); Management of Problem Animals (IX); International Trade in Species and Specimens (X); The Wildlife Fund (XI); Penalties, Forfeitures and Other legal Proceedings (XII); Appeals (XIII); Miscellaneous (XIV); Amendment, Saving and Transitional Provisions (XV).
"Wildlife" means any wild plant or animal of species native in Uganda and includes wild animals which migrate through Uganda (sect. 2). Purposes of the Act are, inter alia, the conservation of the abundance and diversity of species so as to commensurate with other forms of land use, the conservation of selected examples of wildlife communities, the protection of rare, endangered and endemic species of wild plants and animals, and the ecologically acceptable control of problem animals (sect. 3). A body corporate, to be called the Wildlife Authority, is established under section 5. Functions of the Authority are outlined in section 6. The Authority shall be governed by a Board of Trustees (sect. 8). Section 13 provides for local government wildlife committees. The Executive Director of the Authority shall prepare a comprehensive management plan for each wildlife protection area established (sect. 14). Section 15 provides for commercial arrangements for the management of areas of species of animals or plants which may be entered into by the Executive Director with approval of the Board. Section 26 of Chapter IV provides for historic rights of individuals in conservation areas. Section 30 of Chapter specifies various types of wildlife use rights. A Wildlife Fund is established under section 69.

Entry into force notes
Entry into force on a date as may be appointed by the Minister by statutory instrument.
Notes
The Game (Preservation and Control) Act, except the Schedules to the Act, and the NationalParks Act are repealed.Any statutory instrument made under the Acts repealed, in force immediately before the commencement of this Statute shall, continue in force until amended by a statutory instrument made under this StatuteRevised edition of 2000 of Statute 14/1996 (uga9000a.pdf).
