Abstract
This Subpart J applies to the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus), and establishes manatee protection areas within the waters under the jurisdiction of the United States, including coastal waters and inland waters within the several States, and specifies restricted or prohibited activities, for the purpose of preventing the taking of manatees. The Subpart defines the relevant terms, provides for the measures for establishing protected areas, and specifies prohibited activities, including: engaging in waterborne activities within a manatee sanctuary, or a manatee refuge. The Subpart also concerns the issuance of permits authorising activities otherwise prohibited, and the zoning of each designated protected area.
