Abstract
The purpose of this Chapter is to protect and promote the recovery of animals and plants that are in danger of becoming extinct due to the activities of people. provides for the conservation of species that are endangered or threatened throughout all or a significant portion of their range, and the conservation of the ecosystems on which they depend. The Chapter requires federal agencies, in consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and/or the NOAA Fisheries Service, to ensure that actions they authorise, fund, or carry out are not likely to jeopardise the continued existence of any listed species or result in the destruction or adverse modification of designated critical habitat of such species. It also prohibits any action that causes a "taking" of any listed species of endangered fish or wildlife. Also import, export, interstate, and foreign commerce of listed species are all generally prohibited.
