Abstract
This Act, consisting of 26 articles and divided into 3 chapters, concerns the upgrading and conversion into ownership of certain rights granted in respect of land and provides for the transfer of tribal land in full ownership to tribes and for related matters. The Act defines the following relevant terms: formalised township; land tenure right; general plan; register of land rights; title of land right; township; tribal land; tribal resolution; tribe. Chapter 1 provides for the conversion of land tenure rights into ownership and covers the following matters: conversion of land tenure rights mentioned in the attached schedules; content of rights pending conversion; continuation of titles, conditions, servitudes, mortgage bonds; effects of the Act; cancellation of certain servitudes and restricted conditions and related compensation; township registers; conditions of land use. Chapter 2 provides for formalising of townships and covers the following matters: declaration of townships to be a formalised township and related assistance by Minister; surveying; updating and compilation of registers of land rights: Chapter 3 provides for miscellaneous matters, including: legal capacity of a tribe to obtain property; transfer of tribal land to a tribe; legal presumptions; offences and penalties.
