Abstract
These Regulations are made in terms of section 59 of National Biotechnology Authority Act [Chapter 14:31] to regulate the labelling of food or feed containing genetically modified material. They prohibit labelling any food or feed containing products of genetic modification without certificate of authorisation from the National Biotechnology Authority (Authority). The Regulations provide the procedure to obtain such certificate of authorisation and the conditions to grant the same. Operators who produce or sell food, feed, or ingredients containing genetically modified organisms or products derived from them are required to ensure appropriate safety assessments before labelling and packaging. The Regulations lay down labelling and packaging requirements to be adhered to and restrict making claims that are false, misleading or deceptive. The Authority shall verify labels through testing, validation of detecting methods, inspection and audit tracking. The Authority is also required to maintain a register of all certificates issued under the Regulations.
