Abstract
This Law provides for the restoration of the Sevan Lake ecosystem as a strategic reserve for the reproduction, conservation and management of freshwater resources. As such, Sevan lake shall be deemed state property not subject to expropriation, and shall have the permanent status of protected area. The Law further provides for the entire area of Sevan Lake and its water conservation zone to be subject to ecological zoning. Relevant state policy shall be guided by the following principles: (a) approaching Sevan lake and its water conservation zone as uniform functional system; (b) preventing negative water balances and increasing water levels as necessary to maintain a healthy ecosystem; (c) prioritizing the protection of biological diversity; (d) the mandatory use of eco-friendly processes and technologies, including biotechnology, on the territory of Sevan Lake and its water conservation zone; (e) mandatory environmental audits; and (f) promoting traditional methods of nature management.
