Abstract
The object of this Act is to establish the National Water Commission, as an independent statutory body, as required by the National Water Initiative. The Act establishes the National Water Commission under section 6 and establishes the Australian Water Fund Account under section 40. Other provisions of the Act concern constitution and organization of the Commission and the definition of its functions, organization of the Account and its purposes. The Commission shall implement the National Water Initiative to enhance activities under the Initiative and has various advisory functions (sect. 7). The National Water Initiative is an Intergovernmental Agreement on a National Water Initiative between the Commonwealth of Australia and the State Governments. The main purpose of the Account is to provide financial assistance that is awarded by the Minister to particular projects relating to Australia’s water resources.
