Abstract
This Law creates the National Policy on Integrated Fire Management, with the aim of regulating and promoting inter-institutional coordination relating to the following issues: integrated fire management; reduction of the incidence of and damage caused by forest fires in the national territory; recognition of the ecological role of fire in ecosystems and respecting traditional fire use knowledge and practices.
The objectives of the National Integrated Fire Management Policy are: prevent the occurrence and reduce the impacts of forest fires and the unauthorized use of fire, by establishing integrated fire management; promote the use of fire in a controlled, prescribed or traditional manner, in order to respect environmental and socio-cultural diversity and seasonality in ecosystems associated with fire; reduce the incidence, intensity and severity of forest fires; promote the diversification of agroforestry practices; increase the capacity to deal with forest fires in order to improve firefighting planning; promote the process of environmental education, focusing on prevention, causes and environmental and socio-economic consequences of forest fires; promote the conservation and recovery of native vegetation; promote accountability for unauthorized use of fire; consider prescribed burning as a tool for controlling exotic or invasive species, always observing technical and scientific aspects; contribute to the implementation of integrated fire management guidelines in environmental and territorial management actions; respect and encourage the traditional use of fire by indigenous peoples, quilombola communities and other traditional communities and define strategies for preventing and combating forest fires in their territories.
