Law No. 22.806 creating the State Policy on Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security (Pesans) and organizing the National System of Food and Nutrition Security (Sisan).

This Law, consisting of 28 articles divided into five Chapters, creates the State Policy on Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security (Pesans) and organizing the National System of Food and Nutrition Security (Sisan). Pesans, is a strategic component of sustainable development, an instrument for integrated and intersectoral planning of governmental policies and programmes and civil society actions and aims to ensure the human right to adequate food. Pesans is governed by the following principles: right to adequate and healthy food and water; universality and equity in access to adequate food; human right to adequate food; decentralization and participatory management; conservation and sustainable use of socio-biodiversity and natural resources in biomes and other related ecosystems. The specific objectives of Pesans are: create and strengthen actions aiming to promote the human right to adequate food; create tools to ensure access to adequate and healthy food and water; ensure the human right to adequate food; incorporate respect for food sovereignty into State policy; identify, analyze and disseminate the factors determining food and nutritional insecurity.
