Waste Prevention and Management Regulation, 2012.

This Regulation implements the Waste Prevention and Management Act, 2009.
The Regulation aims to establish a sound waste management system through the efficient collection, segregation, treatment, storage, transportation, reuse, recycling and safe disposal of solid, liquid and gaseous wastes.
The Regulation classifies wastes into medical waste, municipal waste, industrial waste and e-waste and for each of these categories it provides for their prevention and management and defines their monitoring and implementing agencies responsible for the implementation of this Regulation.
The Regulation further provides for: the assignment of costs in proportion to the waste volume generated from the point source or by degree of hazardousness by levying fees, charges and fines for non-compliance; the control and prohibition of illegal dumping or the release of waste into the environment; the development and implementation of waste management plans and programmes; the import and export of waste; requirements for waste collection; the maintenance of records related to the generation, collection, storage, treatment and disposal of wastes; offences and penalties; etc.
