Abstract
There shall be established under the Ministry for the time being responsible for Standards a department of Government to be known as “The Belize Bureau of Standards” for the preparation and promotion of standards in relation to goods, services and processes. The Bureau shall be headed by the Director of Standards who shall be appointed by the Governor-General and standards officers, professional and technical officers and inspectors shall be appointed by the Public Services Commission. The inspectors appointed under section 4 shall monitor compulsory standards, to eliminate any process or practice the effects of which adversely affect the environment and carry out other functions specified in section 5. The Bureau shall promote and encourage the maintenance and use of codes of practice, specifications and standards for purposes listed in section 6. For the purpose of this Act, a standard may be voluntary or compulsory. On the recommendation of the Bureau, the Minister may order that a standard become compulsory for reasons set out in section 9. The Minister may, on the recommendation of the Bureau, prescribe a standard mark, which shall be called the Belize Standard Mark. There is established under section 19 a Standards Advisory Council for the purpose of advising the Minister on all matters appertaining to standardization.
