Abstract
The present Act lays down provisions relating to endangered species. The purposes of the Act are to: 1) identify species at risk based on the best available scientific information, including information obtained from community knowledge and aboriginal traditional knowledge; 2) protect species that are at risk and their habitats, and to promote the recovery of species that are at risk; 3) promote stewardship activities to assist in the protection and recovery of species that are at risk. The text - consisting of 57 sections -deals with the following matters: introduction, classification of species, protection and recovery of species, agreements, permits and other instruments, enforcement and offences and penalties. Five Schedules are enclosed as follows: Species declared to be threatened with extinction in Regulation 328 of the Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990 (1); Species to be listed as extirpated species (2); Species to be listed as endangered species (3); Species to be listed as threatened species (4); Species to be listed as special concern species (5).
