Abstract
This Law, consisting of 70 sections and divided into nine chapters in its consolidated version, concerns goods, as any merchandise or product, and standards, and provides for the following matters: introduction of standard measures and units under the international metric system; legal units of measure, station and number; powers of the Council of Ministers to determine supplementary units; prohibition of the use in transactions standard measures or weights other than approved; prohibition of the use of non-standard measures and weights; definition, use and preservation of national prototypes and standards; powers of the Council of Ministers to determine the physical characteristics, of standard measures and weights; approval and necessary conditions for the verification of measures or weights; issuance of certificates and validity periods; offences relating to approved types of measures or weights; appointment of Commissioner of Weights and Measures and of inspectors and specification of their powers; verification, marking and control of measures and weights; powers of inspector to seize weights and measures and goods; obligation to declare the quantity of packaged goods; inspection of packaged goods; prohibition of import of goods not conforming to the metric system; exceptions regarding goods intended for export; crimes and penalties, including: forgery of seals, measures and weights, signs; fraud; providing false information.
