Abstract
This Regulation establishes conditions under which fishing for deep-sea stocks may be practised. Deep-sea species are those listed out in Annexes I and II. As regards the application scope, article 1 defines the Community fishing vessels to which these provisions shall apply; article 2 lays down some definitions. Member States shall ensure that fishing activities leading to catches and retention on board of more than 10 tonnes each calendar year of deep-sea species by vessels flying their flag shall be subject to a deep-sea fishing permit (art. 3). Further provisions establish duties to be performed by the master of the vessel, such as reporting of fishing gear characteristics and fishing operations (art. 5), or reporting of the geographical situation to the flag and coastal States (art. 6). As from 1 March 2003, landing of deep-sea species in excess of 100 kg shall take place solely at ports designated for that purpose by Member States (art. 7). Article 8 concerns the assignment of scientific observers.
