Abstract
This Directive establishes a framework concerning the deployment and use of harmonized river information services (RIS) within the European Community with a view to supporting inland waterway transport. The aims pursued are, inter alia, the enhancement of safety, efficiency and environmental friendliness. River Information Services are defined as the harmonized information services intended to support traffic and transport management in inland navigation. Principles for RIS guidelines and technical specifications are laid down in the Annex attached.
