Abstract
The scope of the Act is to secure the food hygiene quality of food of animal origin and to prevent the infection of human beings by animal diseases through food of animal origin. The Act implements a comprehensive list of EC legislation. The text of the Act consists of 64 sections divided into 7 Chapters: General provisions (1); Powers of authorities (2); Requirements with respect to foodstuffs (3); Requirements with respect to premises and activities (4); Control and inspection (5); Appeal against decisions (6); Penal provisions (7); Miscellaneous provisions (8). "Foodstuffs of animal origin" is not defined in the Act but section 4 declares that, by Order, it shall be established to which extent the Act shall apply to meat, milk, fish products, eggs, honey, and other food of animal origin. Supervision of the implementation and enforcement of provisions of the Act shall lie with the competent Ministry which shall be assisted by the Institute for Veterinary Drugs and Food. Various control tasks on local levels are assigned to the specific bodies at county and municipal level.
