Abstract
This Technical Regulation has been developed in accordance with the national and international requirements in the field of protection against radiation, nuclear safety and security. It establishes the basic requirements establishes requirements for the treatment of radioactive waste to protect personnel, population and the environment against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. It applies to the treatment of all types of radioactive waste in the territory of Georgia, except for those removed or excluded from this Regulation, as well as for unowned (uncontrolled) radioactive sources, which can be used later. The requirements established by this Technical Regulation are mandatory for all natural and legal persons, regardless of their organizational and legal form, who carry out nuclear and radiation activities related to radioactive waste, as well as for those persons who do not carry out such activities, but as a result of their activities, radioactive waste is generated. This Technical Regulation does not apply to used nuclear fuel and industrial waste with increased natural radionuclide content, the concentration of which does not exceed the level of removal from regulation. The purpose of this Technical Regulation is to protect people and the environment from the radiation risk caused by the management, processing and/or storage of radioactive waste. The following factors should be taken into account when dealing with radioactive waste: (a) the type of generated radioactive waste, as well as the type of its generation; (b) nuclear material criticality; (c) aggregate state and radiological, physical, chemical, biological characteristics, such as: fire hazard, explosion hazard, flammability, self-ignition, corrosivity, organic and inorganic origin and toxicity; (d) class of radioactive waste.
