Abstract
This Law aims at protecting stray animals from exploitation or speculative use. Competent Authorities for the Implementation and Control of the Animal Welfare Rules and the System and Registration of Animals and their Owners are those authorities which, at the Regional, Regional Units and Municipalities level, ensure that they are properly implemented and monitored. The competent authority for the protection of animals and the observance of their welfare rules shall be the Veterinary Directorate-General of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food. Competent Authorities for the Management of the Online Electronic Database for Pet Animals and their Owners are specified in the text. The natural or legal person or association of persons who, for commercial purposes, breeds or sells pet animals must be provided with a corresponding establishment and operating license issued by the Directorate-General for Regional Agricultural Economics and Veterinary of the Region concerned, to be subject to the control of that authority and to comply with the conditions laid down in Presidential Decree No. 184/1996.

Entry into force notes
This Law enters into force on the day of its publication in the Government Gazette.
Notes
The provisions of Articles 1 to 13 of Law No. 3170/2003 shall be repealed with the exception of paragraph 6 of Article 7, as well as any other general or specific provision regulating its different issues.
