Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 (Act No. 61 of 1986).

This Act provides for prohibition of child labour and restricts the employment of adolescents only to non-hazardous occupation and processes. A child is considered to be under the age of fourteen by the Act and an adolescent is under the age of eighteen but has competed the age of fourteen. Section 3 prohibits employment of children in any occupation and process. section 3A prohibits employment of adolescents in certain hazardous occupations and processes as set forth in the Schedule to the Act. Section 4 gives the government the power to amend the Schedule.
Section 5 constitutes an advisory committee called the Technical Advisory Committee to advise the central government on addition of occupations and processes to the Schedule. Section 7 and 8 provide for the permitted hours of work and holidays for adolescents employed in any establishment. Section 13 provides for making rules for the health and safety of the adolescents employed in any establishment. Section 14 lays down the penalties for contravention of the Act. Section 14B provides for creation of Child and Adolescent Labour Rehabilitation Fund to deposit fines realised from employers and to be used to rehabilitate children and adolescents.
