Abstract
This Act provides for the protection and management of forests in the State of Orissa.
The Act recognizes the power of the State Government to declare any land which is property of the Government as reserve forest. The State Government shall further specify the limits of such lands and appoint a Forest Settlement Officer to inquire into and determine the existence, nature and extent of any rights that exist in favour of any person in or over any land comprised within such limits and deal with these as provided for in the text.
In addition, the Act empowers the State Government to constitute any land as village forest for the benefit of village communities and may also declare any land not included in a reserved forest to be a protected forest.
The Act further provides for: restrictions in protected forests; rule making powers of the State Government; powers of the State Government to control forests and land which are not its property or over which it has joint interest; control of timber and other forest produce in transit or possession; collection of drift and stranded timber; protection of sandal wood trees; grazing of cattle in reserved forests; offences and penalties; etc.
