Companies bear primary responsibility for compliance at all stages of production and distribution, while authorities have broad powers to conduct unannounced inspections, collect samples, and publish results. Special provisions govern the handling of animal by-products, labeling of organic products, cadmium levels in fertilizers, and imports from outside the EEA. Costs of supervision are covered by inspection fees paid by companies. Overall, the law sets a comprehensive framework for safeguarding food chains in Iceland from farm inputs to consumer safety.
