Abstract
This Regulation regulation sets out the requirements for quarantine of imported pets, especially dogs and cats, and for the licensing, construction, operation, hygiene, biosecurity, supervision and possible revocation of quarantine facilities. It gives the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (Matvælastofnun) a central supervisory role, including approval of facilities, procedures, veterinarians, transport arrangements, inspections and responses to suspected disease. Dogs and cats must be transported under strict biosecurity and welfare conditions from the point of import to an approved quarantine station, where they normally remain for at least 14 days, receive veterinary checks, parasite testing/treatment, daily care, monitoring and controlled discharge. The regulation also covers home quarantine for assistance dogs under specific approval conditions, quarantine arrangements for other pets such as rabbits, rodents, cage birds, ornamental fish and aquatic animals, record-keeping, waste handling, staff competence, emergency plans, and penalties for breaches.
