Act No. 55 on animal welfare.

This Act contains minimum requirements for the care of animals in Iceland. Considering that animals are sentient beings, its objective is to promote animal welfare, which entails ensuring that they do not suffer distress, hunger or thirst, fear or suffering, pain, injuries or disease. The Act contains the following sections: I. Objective, scope and definitions; II. Administration of animal welfare; III. General provisions regarding animal care; IV. Inspections and controls; V. Care and treatment of animals; VI. Identification of animals, etc.; VII. Wild animals; VIII. Living conditions, environment, etc.; IX. Charging of fees, etc.; X. Administrative provisions and sanctions; X. Entry into force etc. Article 6 prohibits the ill treatment of animals, making animal keepers responsible for ensuring that animals are cared for in accordance with the provisions of this Act. Otherwise, provisions of this Act concern, among other things, animal care in general, surgical and medical procedures, training and competitions, transport of animals, breeding, experimental activities, killing, living conditions, capture, etc. The provisions on sanctions include criminal liability.
