Abstract
The purpose of this Act is to promote policies to ensure food safety by establishing basic principles and by clarifying the responsibilities of the national and local governments, of food related business operators and the roles of consumers.
The Act provides for the formulation of policies to ensure food safety including: policies for preventing and restraining the adverse effect of food ingestion on human health; measures necessary for promoting the mutual exchange of information; close and mutual coordination among relevant administrative organs; measures to improve scientific knowledge; and measures to ensure the appropriate operation of a food labelling system.
The Act further provides for the establishment of a Food Safety Commission and defines its internal organization. The Commission will be charged with evaluating the safety of food products and monitoring the government's food safety policies.
