Hygienic Standards Approximate safe levels of exposure to pollutants in the atmospheric air of populated areas establish safe levels of harmful pollutants in the atmospheric air of populated areas. Hygienic standards apply to the atmospheric air of populated areas of urban and rural settlements. Hygienic standards are used to resolve issues of preventive supervision, to justify the requirements for the development of health measures to protect the atmospheric air of designed, reconstructed and experimental small-tonnage industries. Hygienic standards are established based on calculations of the parameters of toxicometry of substances, using interpolations and extrapolations in series of compounds that are similar in chemical structure, physical and chemical properties and nature of action. Hygienic standards are established as maximum single and average daily maximum permissible concentrations indicating the hazard class and the limiting indicator of harmfulness, which is the basis for establishing the standard for a specific substance. Hazard classes of substances for which only maximum single maximum permissible concentrations are established are determined taking into account the risk of developing reflex (primarily olfactory) reactions. Hazard classes of substances for which both maximum single and average daily maximum permissible concentrations are established are determined taking into account the risk of developing those effects whose development is most dangerous under the action of a specific substance. Hazard classes of substances limited by resorptive action are determined taking into account the risk of developing these effects.
