Abstract
This Decision sets out requirements for the production, quality, safety, and marketing of salt intended for human consumption and use in the food industry, with the aim of preventing iodine deficiency disorders and protecting public health. It also designates the competent authorities responsible for enforcement and monitoring. The Regulation defines edible salt and its types, and establishes that salt placed on the national market must be iodized, subject to specified iodine compounds and concentration ranges. It sets general compositional and purity requirements and establishes maximum permissible levels for contaminants.
The Decision regulates the packaging, labeling, transport, storage and commercialization of iodized salt, including specific labeling requirements on iodine content and composition. It lays down conditions for the limited marketing of non-iodized salt, including mandatory consumer warnings. In addition, the Regulation provides for the mandatory use of iodized salt in the production of certain food products, specifically bread and bakery products, as well as in public catering institutions, subject to defined exceptions. It also establishes procedures for state monitoring and control of iodized salt across the production and supply chain.
