Abstract
This Veterinary and Sanitary Regulation establishes minimum requirements for the protection of calves intended for rearing and fattening. Keeping facilities must meet at least the following minimum requirements: (1) calves should not be kept in individual cages after 8 weeks of age, unless an official veterinarian confirms that their condition of health or behavior require their isolation for treatment. Width of individual cage must be no less than the height of the calf at the withers, measured in a standing position, and the length - not less than the length of the calf, measured from the tip of the nose to the root of the tail (ischial tuberosities), multiplied by 1.1. The provisions of this subparagraph do not apply to facilities for keeping with a livestock of less than 6 calves and calves kept with their mothers for feeding; and (b) individual cages for calves (with the exception of cages for isolating sick animals) should not have solid walls, but only walls made of openwork masonry, allowing calves to make direct visual and tactile contact. Calves should be fed at least twice a day. If calves are kept in groups and they are not fed using discrete feeds or an automatic feeding system, then each calf should have simultaneous access to feed with other animals of the group.
