Law No. 440-XIII on water conservation zones and water belts of rivers and waterbodies.

This Law regulates creation of water conservation zones and littoral water belts of rivers and waterbodies, the modalities of management and protection thereof. Special water management terms and conditions shall be applicable to water conservation zones and water belts. In case of the use of surface waterbodies for water abstraction for the purpose of potable water supply there shall be established sanitary protection zone in place of water abstraction. The Act consists of four Sections divided into 21 articles: (1) general provisions; (2) dimensions of water conservation zone and water belts; (3) liability; and (4) conclusive and transitional provisions. Compulsory planting of protection forests shall be carried out on the banks of rivers and waterbodies especially where soil erosion is under way. Boundaries of water conservation zones and water belts shall be delimited in-situ by protection forests, roads and anti-erosion waterworks.
