Abstract
This Act makes provision for the establishment of the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute as a body corporate and defines its objects, functions and powers. The objects of the Institute shall include: (a) to introduce, develop and promote such novel technologies in the food and non-sugar agricultural sector as may be approved by the Minister; and (b) to coordinate, promote and harmonise research activities in non-sugar agriculture, food production and forestry. The Institute may, among other things, conduct extension and advisory activities in non-sugar crops, livestock, food production and agribusiness and advise the Minister generally on national policies related to research in non-sugar agriculture, food production and forestry. The Act also grants regulation-making powers to the Minister and makes consequential amendments to other Acts.
