Palm Oil Research and Development Act 1979 (No. 218)

This Act provides for the establishment of some institutions engaged in developing and carrying out research with respect to the palm oil industry sector. The Act is divided into the following Parts: (I) Preliminary; (II) The Board; (III) The Institute; (IV) Financial provisions; (V) Cess; (VI) Audit and Annual Report; (VII) Supplementary. One Schedule is attached.
First of all, Section 3 establishes the Palm Oil Research and Development Board, a body corporate which is empowered, inter alia: (a) to conduct and promote research relating to the production, extraction, processing, storage, transportation, marketing, consumption and uses of palm oil and oil palm products; (b) to acquire, hold, dispose or grant rights in connection with the result of the said research activities, if it deems it necessary; (c) to collect and disseminate information as regards oil palm, palm oil, oil palm products and other vegetable or animal oils and fats; (d) to promote the use of palm oil and oil palm products. Furthermore, the Board shall set up the Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia, in accordance with Section 7., as well as the Palm Oil Research Fund (Section 10). The latter shall be in charge of the funding of the activities covered by this Act.
