Local Authorities Act, 1992.

This Act makes provision for the determination and establishment of local authority councils, the management of local councils and committees of local councils and defines functions and powers of local councils.
“Local authority councils” means a municipal council, town council or village council. The Act defines the functions and powers of local authority councils in various fields including supply of water, sewerage and drainage. A local authority may, after consultation with the Minister, make Regulations with respect to a wide variety of matters including: supply, distribution and use of water in the local authority area; pollution of water; slaughtering; sale of food; preservation and safeguarding of health; prevention and abatement of public nuisances; restriction, regulation and control of the use of common pasture; and townlands and the fishing in or on dams.
