Abstract
The present regulation of the Government of Greenland establishes rules for the protection and capture of polar foxes (Vulpes lagopus). It prohibits hunting in national parks and during the closed season (15 May–15 September), except near settlements, sheep farms, and sled dog districts, where hunting is permitted year-round for licensed hunters for five years. Only rifles of minimum caliber .17 may be used, while poisons, traps, and motorized vehicles are banned. Hunters must ensure foxes are killed quickly and report wounded, dead, or emergency killings, as well as all annual catches. Municipalities may issue additional regulations, and keeping foxes in captivity requires special permission. The Ministry of Fisheries, Hunting, and Agriculture may grant exemptions for scientific or population management purposes and require samples for biological studies. Violations can result in fines and confiscation, with revenues going to the state.
