Act No. 49 of 1978 on reindeer farming.

The Act consists of 39 sections, divided into 7 Chapters: Scope and basic principles of reindeer farming (I); Management bodies, administration and district plans (II); The contents of the right to carry out reindeer farming (III); Marking of tame reindeers, registration of reindeer marks (IV); General rules for the carrying out of reindeer farming (V); Liability for damages. Compensation (VI); Miscellaneous provisions (VII).
The scope of the Act is to promote the "ecologically-sustainable exploitation of reindeer resources". In this framework, the Act provides for rights and duties of reindeer farmers; regulates the relationship with other economic activities having regard to the general interest; regulates the relationship between reindeer farmers as far as necessary; and lays the foundation for administration and organization of reindeer farming. Section 2 provides for the establishment of reindeer areas, districts, and pasture zones. A Reindeer Commission is established under section 6. The right of reindeer farming shall consists of: grazing of reindeers on reindeer pastures and other actions related to keeping and breeding of reindeers, use of wood for fuel and timber logging, fishing and hunting, subject to conditions laid down in section 10.
