Abstract
This Regulation governs the sustainable and humane harvesting of wild fauna and the collection of eggs and down in Svalbard, excluding marine fish, crustaceans, and non-native marine mammals. The regulation sets out clear seasonal restrictions and species-specific rules for hunting, fishing, and trapping—reserving certain activities like reindeer and Arctic fox hunting to permanent residents. It mandates permits, quotas, reporting obligations, and age limits, and requires both hunting and shooting proficiency tests. Specific provisions regulate gear types, animal welfare, and safety. Oversight is divided between environmental and fisheries authorities, with enforcement handled by the Governor of Svalbard (Sysselmesteren). Violations may result in fines or imprisonment.
