Abstract
This Act provides for the application in South Africa of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) as modified by the Protocol of 1978. The Act: defines the application sphere of the Convention; grants regulation-making powers to the Minister of Transport for purposes of carrying out provisions of the Convention and for achievement of the purposes of this Act; defines offences and prescribes penalties for such offences; and concerns jurisdiction of South African courts with respect to such offences.
