Law No. 9.519 creating the Forest Code of the State of Rio Grande do Sul.

This Forestry Code approves the Forestry Policy of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The State Policy aims at achieving the rational use of forestry resources based on ecological knowledge, aiming at improving the quality of life of the population and the compatibility of socio-economic development with the preservation of the environment and ecological balance. The specific objectives of the State's forestry policy are: create, implement and maintain a State System of Conservation Units in order to protect biological existing natural ecosystems; facilitating and promoting the development and dissemination of research and technology for forestry; monitoring the state's forest cover for the planning and rationalization of forest activities; exercise the power of forest police in state territory; creating afforestation and reforestation programmes; facilitating and promoting the protection and restoration of water, soil and biological diversity; promoting the recovery of degraded areas, especially permanent preservation areas and legal reserves; establishing forest protection programmes to prevent and control pests, diseases and forest fires; identifying and monitoring relevant plant associations, rare, endemic and endangered species; implementing a database that gathers all the data on the forestry area; keeping records of producers, traders and consumers of forest products in the State; carrying out the statistical control of supply and demand of forest raw material at regional and state levels; implementing actions to find the dynamic balance between the supply and demand of forestry raw material at regional and state levels, based on the principle of the sustainable regime and multiple use; integrate the actions of the forest authority with other environmental agencies and entities that work in the State.
