Abstract
The Act provides for the establishment of Environmental Protection Agency, the Environmental Assessment Board, the Environmental Appeals Tribunal and the Environmental Trust Fund.
The Act consists of 71 sections divided into 10 Parts: Preliminary (I): Establishment and functions of the Agency (II); Administration (III); Environmental Impact Assessments (IV): Prevention and control of pollution (V); Financial; assurance (VI); Investigations, prosecutions, civil procedures (VII); Establishment and jurisdiction of the Environmental Appeals Tribunal (VIII); Environmental Trust Fund and finances (IX); Miscellaneous (X).
The Agency, established under section 3 as a body corporate, shall establish, monitor and enforce environmental regulations, co-ordinate an integrated coastal zone management programme and carry out other functions in relation with environment protection and enhancement set out in section 4. The same section sets out powers of the Agency, specific duties and principles of environmental management.

An Act to provide for the management, conservation, protection and improvement of the environment, the prevention or control of pollution, the assessment of the impact of economic development on the environment, the sustainable use of resources and for matters incidental thereto or connected therewith.
Entry into force notes
The Act comes into operation on a date to be appointed by the Minister.

Consolidated version of Act No. 11 of 1996 as authorized by L.R.O. 1/2012 and amended by Act No. 17 of 2005.The provisions of the Guyana Agency for Health, Sciences, Education, Environment and Food Policy Order 1988, insofar as they relate to the environment and other matters provided for in this Act, shall cease to have effect.
