Abstract
This Law concerns the enhancement of agricultural and livestock production in Iceland. It shall also promote equal market conditions for food producers. It establishes the Agricultural Production Council, which is a cooperative forum for all agricultural producers in the country and their associations. It also provides with respect to a Committee of Commodities. The Act principally sets out rules for the internal marketing of agricultural products. Before decisions are taken on import and export of agricultural products, the parties involved shall seek the opinion and recommendations of the Agricultural Council. The Minister of Agriculture may, by regulation, decide that milk and dairy products, eggs, potatoes, garden vegetables and vegetables, which are sold on the domestic market or exported to foreign markets, shall be assessed, classified and labeled by species, quality and origin, provided that the product meets the health and hygiene rules which are established under Act No. 81 of 1988 on sanitary and health surveillance, and Act No. 24 of 1936 on food and other consumer goods and services.
