Abstract
This Act provides rules relative to fishing in Kiribati waters (as defined). The term "fish" for purposes of this Act includes aquatic animals such as turtles. The purpose of this Act is: (a) to promote the sustainable management of the fisheries of Kiribati and the development and use of fisheries resources for the benefit of Kiribati, including the recovery of fees that reflect the value of the resource; and (b) to protect fish stocks and the marine environment of Kiribati. The Act also concerns: the licensing of local and foreign fishing vessels, aquaculture and fish processing establishments; access and international agreements; the protection of customary rights; the prohibition of driftnet fishing and destructive fishing methods; and instruments of enforcement.
The Director of Fisheries shall prepare a management plan for each Designated Fisheries, i.e. an area designated as such by the Minister under this Act and enjoying a special conservation regime.
