Abstract
This Act makes provision with respect to local government in Kiribati and for this purpose provides for the establishment of local government councils, defines their functions and powers and contains rules to their election, functioning and administration.
Local government councils shall act as rating authorities and shall carry out functions in various sectors including agriculture, livestock and fisheries, town and village planning, forestry, land conservation, relief of famine and drought, public health, public utilities, trade and industry and the management of recreation grounds and parks. Specific functions of the councils are set out in the Schedule to this Act. Councils shall also prohibit, restrict or regulate the hunting, capture, killing or sale of animals, reptiles, birds or fish or any specified kind of animal, reptile, bird or fish.
