Abstract
This Act provides for the preparation, promotion and implementation of standards and standard related activities in relation to commodities, goods, services, processes and practices, in order to ensure quality and compliance with the related standards. The Act defines the following relevant terms: certification; code of practice, as method of production of any goods, or of the execution of any service; conformity assessment; home use in relation to imported goods; inspection; National quality infrastructure; standard; standards mark. The Act concerns: functions of the Saint Christopher and Nevis Bureau of Standards, including: facilitating trade, industrial efficiency and development; promoting public and industrial welfare and health and safety for safeguarding the environment; encouraging the maintenance and implementation of industry standards, for goods or services produced and used in Saint Christopher and Nevis; providing conformity assessment services and connected matters; promoting research, conformity assessment and market surveillance operations; cooperation and exchanging information with national, regional or other international bodies in the field of standardisation; establishing and declaring standards and technical regulations for the improvement of goods produced in Saint Christopher and Nevis.
Further matters covered by this Act include: administration of the Bureau and appointment of its members; licenses to use standards mark; declaration and publication of standards, in order to: prevent fraud, protect consumers, ensure acceptable quality in goods, protect the environment, protect public and industrial health and welfare; labelling of goods; inspection of imported goods; designation of test equipment; offences and penalties.
