Abstract
This Regulation determines which food aromas, or else called nutritional flavorings, may be used in and on foods, sets the necessary conditions for their correct and controlled use and labelling, including the issue sand specific manner and conditions of placing them on the market.
Food aromas or nutritional flavorings are products that are added to food to give it or change its odor and/or taste and are not intended for direct consumption, obtained from aromatic substances, aromatic preparations, aromas obtained by thermal process, aroma of smoke, precursors flavors or other flavors and mixtures thereof.
This Regulation shall apply to: flavorings used or intended for use in food; food ingredients with aromatic properties; foods containing flavors and/or food ingredients with flavoring properties; original raw materials for flavorings and/or original raw materials for food ingredients with flavoring properties; smoke flavorings used or intended for use in or on foods; raw materials for the production of smoke flavorings; preparation of smoke aromas; food in or on which smoke flavorings are present.
This text transposes the provisions contained in the Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 December 2008 on flavorings and certain food ingredients with flavoring properties for use in and on foods and amending Council Regulation (EEC) No 1601/91, Regulations (EC) No 2232/96 and (EC) No 110/2008 and Directive 2000/13/EC; Regulation (EC) No 2065/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 10 November 2003 on smoke flavorings used or intended for use in or on foods; Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 1321/2013 of 10 December 2013 establishing the Union list of authorized smoke flavoring primary products for use as such in or on foods and/or for the production of derived smoke flavorings; and other, see page 6 for the complete list.
The Annex is part of this publication (complete list and related classification of all approved food flavors).
