Abstract
This Act makes provision for the collection, management and disposal of waste in Tonga. For these purposes, the Act makes provision for the designation of waste management service areas and for the appointment of Approved Waste Authorities for waste management service areas.
The Act defines functions, powers and internal organization of Approved Waste Authorities and powers of the Minister with respect to waste management. The Act further; grants power to Ministers to prescribe environmental standards and public health standards relating to waste management practices and facilities; require waste dump sites to be approved and licensed by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources; and prescribe offences in respect of dumping of waste, importation of toxic or hazardous wastes and other waste-related activities.
