Abstract
This Act makes provision for the control of manufacturing of and trade in food. Section 1 gives interpretations. Section 2 prohibits manufacture, import, sell or distribute any food listed in that section. Section 3 prescribes rules relative to labelling, advertising, etc. of foodstuffs. Section 5 prohibits the sale of food unfit for human consumption as animal food or for other purposes except with a permission of the Chief Food Authority. Wholesalers of food shall give a warranty to vendors regarding quality and nature of food supplied in accordance with section 6. Sections 7 to 11 concern administration of this Act. There shall be one Chief Food Authority and a Food Authority for each administrative area. The Minister may appoint food analysts and various types of inspectors. Sections 14 to 23 prescribe measures of enforcement. Other provisions of this Act prescribe offences and provide for legal proceedings, for the Vanuatu Nutritional Health and Food Safety Fund and for some matters of miscellaneous character.

Reprinted version of 2006 of Act No. 21 of 1993.The provisions of the Meat Industry Act No. 5 of 1991 shall apply for the purposes of the enforcement, and prevention and punishment of contraventions or attempted contraventions of the provisions of this Act relating to food hygiene. For the purpose of the application of the Meat Industry Act No. 5 of 1991 to any food hygiene requirements of which is regulated under this Act, such food shall be deemed to be food the hygiene of which is regulated under the Meat Industry Act No. 5 of 1991. The provisions of the: (a) Customs Act [CAP. 3]; (b) Immature Whisky (Prohibition) Act [CAP. 7]; (c) Alcohol Importation Act [CAP. 8]; (d) Liquor Licensing Act [CAP. 52]; (e) Animal Importation and Quarantine Act [CAP. 201]; shall apply for the purposes of the enforcement, prevention and punishment of contraventions or attempted contraventions, of the provisions of this Act relation to the Importation of any food. For the purposes of the application of these Acts to any food the importation of which is, prohibited under this Act, such food shall be deemed to be food the importation of which is prohibited under these Acts.
