Abstract
This Directive lays down common measures for the contained use of genetically modified microorganisms with a view to protecting human health and the environment. Member States shall ensure that all appropriate measures are taken to avoid adverse effects on human health and the environment, which might arise from the contained use of genetically modified microorganisms. Member States shall designate the authority or authorities competent to implement the measures, which they adopt in application of this Directive. In Annex I are listed the techniques of genetic modification that are included or excluded from this Directive, Annex II sets the criteria for classification of genetically modified microorganisms of group I A, Annex III regards the safety assessment parameters to be taken, Annex IV the containment measures for microorganisms of group II and finally Annex V contains the information required for the notification referred to in various articles of this Directive.
