This Regulation lays down rules on the protection of designations of origin and geographical indications of agricultural products intended for human consumption referred to in Annex II to the Treaty and of the foodstuffs referred to in Annex I to this Regulation and agricultural products listed in Annex II to this Regulation.
The Regulation sets out a framework for a Community scheme to register and protect products to be qualified as protected designation of origin (PDO) or as protected geographical indication (PGI). Designation of origin means the name of a region, a specific place or, in exceptional cases, a country, used to describe an agricultural product or a foodstuff. Geographical indication means the name of a region, a specific place or, in exceptional cases, a country, used to describe an agricultural product or a foodstuff. Only a group or, subject to certain conditions to be laid down in accordance with the procedure provided for in article 15, a natural or legal person, shall be entitled to apply for registration. Generic names shall be excluded from registration. (18 articles and 2 Annexes)
