Abstract
The Act is divided into the following Parts: Preliminary (I); Forest Reserves (II); General Provisions as to Forest Produce, etc. (III); Penalties and Procedure (IV); Miscellaneous (V).
The Act makes provisions for the preservation of forests and regulates the trade of forestry products. The Minister shall, by notification in the Gazette, create Forest Reserves, according to the procedure set out in Part II of the present Act. The Forest Reserves may be classified as follows: (a) Protection Forest; (b) Commercial Forest; (c) Domestic Forest; (d) Amenity Forest; (e) Mangrove Forest; (f) Virgin Jungle Reserve. The Act prohibits the cutting, collection or removal of forest produce, and establishes penalties to be applied in case of contravention. Final provisions concern the enforcement measures to be taken by the competent authorities.
