Abstract
This Law makes provision for the registration of ships in Jersey and navigation by Jersey ships and other ships in Jersey waters. It also provides, among other things, for the safety of fishing vessels and the prevention of pollution by ships. The Law provides for implementation of international agreements in these fields.
A "Jersey ship" shall include a small ship, other than a fishing vessel, that is not registered under Part 3 of this Law. The register of Jersey ships shall be kept by the Registrar of Shipping appointed under this Law. The Law sets out supplementary provisions as respects the unlawful use of unregistered vessels used for fishing and the construction, survey and certification of fishing vessels. Fishing vessels shall not be taken to sea unless they comply with construction and equipment requirements.
As regards the pollution caused by ships, the Law provides, among other things for: waste reception facilities at harbours; oil pollution; pollution by substances other than oil; enforcement of Conventions relating to oil pollution; and power of the States to give effect to the International Convention on Liability and Compensation for Damage in Connection with the Carriage of Hazardous and Noxious Substances by Sea 1996.
